Art Island Outpost: hands-on art making workshops, Saturdays and Sundays, 11 am to 3 pm till Sept. 30. You have to take the ferry near the Staten Island Ferry. Young artists will be inspired and challenged to explore big projects utilizing found objects and traditional mediums. This is a space to invent, adapt, and transform your relationship to art and the art making process. Hosted by the Children’s Museum of the Arts. Governors Island, New York Harbor.
New York Crystal Palace 1853, 11 am, $5-$7. Tue, Fri-Sun, 11 am-5 pm, Wed, Thu, 11 am-8 pm. In July 1853, on the site of today’s Bryant Park, the New York Crystal Palace, an iron-and-glass structure inspired by its London counterpart, hosted the first American World’s Fair. The Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, as it was called, was a chance for New Yorkers to experience the convenience of new consumer goods (early Singer sewing machines were on display) and to marvel at developing technologies (as with a photograph of the moon taken through a telescope by the inventor John James Whipple). The building itself was a wonder, too, and did much to cement the rising image of American industry and engineering. This look back exhibition includes artifacts from the fair (like the “Cradle of Harmony” violin invented by William Sidney Mount) and photographs of the building, which burned down in 1858. Saturday, June 10: Vegan Street Fair, 11 am, free entry, pay vendors directly $4 bites. Grand Bazaar, 100 W 77th St & Columbus, Manhattan. Extra Crispy Breakfestival, 12-8 pm, a lot of different small plates, dozens of vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants and vendors including Samosa Shack, Three Girls Vegan Creamery, and Organic Grill, serving up bite-size portions of dishes all priced at $4 or less. Pet Costume Day, 2 pm, 2 cans of dog food as registration fee. You can take Fido on The Wonder Wheel because pets ride free when accompanied by their owner, or participate in the Coney Costume. First prize is a season pass for Deno’s Wonder Wheel and a $150 certificate to Petco; 2nd prize is Day passes to the Wheel and a $75 gift certificate to Petco; 3rd prize also garners day passes to the wheel along with a $25 certificate to Petco. The Museum of Interesting Things has a special windup-toy themed 16mm vintage film bouncing ball sing-a-long party.
