More Weekend events posted tomorrow late afternooon. Saturday Mermaid Parade in Coney Island at 1 pm. It is like Mardi Gras. Singer Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie will be the Parade Marshall. There are vintage cars, marching bands, odd floats and 1,000 plus costumes with a theme from sea. It goes for a few hours but many stick around to see the costumes on the boardwalk, beach and eateries. I personally walk a lot of the parade areas. If you want the best viewing area, it is opposite the judge’s grand stand and the acts perform there for a while, which is by the Cyclone’s Baseball Stadium on Surf Ave. Also at the finish line on the boardwalk I get different groups together to take a photo. Crossing Surf Ave, you have to wait for the police to let people pass as the parade slows up, which might be I’m guessing every 20 minutes. The most crowded is by Nathan’s and the Cyclone roller coaster. Afterwards the big bars are Ruby’s Bar on the boardwalk and Peggy O’Neil’s by the Cyclone’s Baseball Stadium. A map is in one of these links. http://www.coneyisland.com/programs/mermaid-parade
